Shava, a 70-year-old Kyrgyz manaschi learned to sing the whole Manas epic as a child. A full performance can take up to 24 hours. Your chance to catch a glimpse of a dying Central Asian oral tradition.

Tintii Jamanakov, a 60-year-old eagle trainer, lives 22km from Karakol in Djele-Debe. His eagles weigh up to 12kg. As chicks, eagles are taught to recognize Tintii as their parent, then trained to hunt in the mountains and on the steppes - a traditional Kyrgyz practice still in use today. 'Meet the Eagle man' includes:
 - Talk with eagle trainer (how eagles and falcons are caught, trained, cared for etc)
 - Services of interpreter
 - Handling of Natashka, Tintii's 8-year-old golden eagle.
 - Length of visit (up to 2 hours, at Tintii's home) client's decision
Display of hunting techniques includes:
 - 1 hour in fields outside Djele-Debe

For those with too little time to visit Altyn Arashan this is an opportunity to bathe in natural hot springs. The sanatorium at Ak Suu, 7km from Karakol, is set in a pretty gorge and has numerous relaxing bathhouses.

Djety-Oguz, the extraordinary 'Valley of Seven Bulls', is famous for its unusually bright, red sandstone rock formations. Besides numerous walks and photo opportunities the Valley's small sanatorium offers another chance to rest your travel-weary limbs in natural hot springs or mud baths.

KALMYK CULTURE AND HORSEBACK SCENERY
Option I (Half-Day)
Horseback Adventure

Your cultural excursion begins with a transfer from Karakol to the home of Beyshbay and Koshulkhan. Here you will spend about half an hour being introduced to the Kalmyk way of life. After tea, you will be taken by horseback to the top of Boru-Bash hill at 1811m. From here you can drink in spectacular views of the Terskey and Kungey Ala-Too ranges and of Tyup and Mikhailovsky bays on Lake Issyk-Kul. It is an easy descent down the hill to an area of clay and sandy canyons (resembling Kandagar in Afghanistan). After riding through these canyons you will come to a traditional sheep farm where you can meet local shepherds and learn about their customs and lifestyle. After a hearty hot dinner of national Kalmyk dishes on meadows beside two small lakes you will be driven back to Karakol.
Duration of excursion approx 5 hours. From March to October.

Option II (Half-Day)
Local Culture and Relaxing Scenery

Similar to option one, this variant involves a car transfer to the top of Boru-Bash hill rather than the longer horse ride. Horse riding is however possible on arrival at Beyshbay and Koshulkhan's house - half an hour of riding is included. After visiting Boru-Bash hill you will be driven to the Przhevalsky Memorial and then back to Karakol. An outdoor meal, the sheep farm and time with Beyshbay's family is included as before.
Excursion duration approx 3 hours. From April to November.

Option III (Half-Day)
Winter Wonderland

After arriving at the Kalmyk family home you will be fitted with skis. From here we will cross-country ski to the top of Boru-Bash hill then down to the canyons below. An outdoor meal, the sheep farm and time with Beyshbay's family is included as before.

The rural hamlet of Svetly Mys, 48km from Karakol is heavy with history. As the reputed burial place of the apostle Matthew, a series of eight monasteries were founded here over two millennia. Little visited by foreigners, this is discovery travelling at its best.6 hours. Sightseeing includes:
- Walking tour of surviving 19th century Russian Orthodox monastery buildings and cave-cell remains of an earlier Armenian Monastery. Interpreted talk with Lidia Mikhailovna, a local woman who saw monks' graves desecrated in the 50s. Visit to the Scythian burial mounds at Belovodsk- Lunch at 'Spring Grace' an ex-monastery building, now the cheerful home of Gulnara and Ruslan and their 29 adopted children (5$ pp donation included)

OUTDOOR SKATING- 3$ per person skate hire and unlimited skating time

Possible daily Dec-Feb on a frozen basketball court in central Karakol. One hour advance notice needed to find a slot that does not clash with school ice hockey lessons.

Karakol's ski run is 12km from the town, in beautiful Kashka-Suu Valley. With a 1km drag lift the run itself drops 2.4km from 3,040 to 2,380m. A picnic lunch and guided excursions around Karakol Canyon are the perfect complement to a morning of powder and adrenalin.
