ITINERARY
Day 1. Almaty - Karakol
After arriving in Almaty, capital of Kazakhstan, you will be met and driven to KARAKOL, via CHARYN CANYON (the Kyrgyz equivalent of America's Grand Canyon). The road/way Almaty - Issyk-Kul Lake is much shorter than via Bishkek. We will stop en route at TEMIRLAN STONES, legendary burial ground of the prehistoric Kyrgyz-Kazakhs. Optional city tour on arrival in Karakol. Overnight at our yurt camp in the center of town. More information and pictures of Kyrgyzstan, Issyk-Kul Lake, Karakol valley trekking, rest and fishing.

Day 2. Karakol - Karasay - EmegenBridge over Taragay
After breakfast you will begin your tour with a transfer to EMEGEN valley in a comfortable 6wd ex-Soviet army truck. From here we will continue to KARASAY valley, crossing the TARAGAY river over an excitingly rickety wooden bridge (left). Crossing 3 passes at over 4000m each the journey will take 6-7 hours. Your first camp is 200km from Karakol in a valley surrounded by wild and high rocky mountains. This area is so remote that bumping into a local person is likely to provoke enthusiastic celebrations.

Day 3. Emegen
A day at leisure to enjoy the wild natural environment. Here you will find plenty of opportunities to go climbing, amongst a multitude of accessible, snow-covered peaks. This is hiking paradise, offering numerous spectacular walking possibilities along and around the valley. Overnight camping beside the truck.

Day 4. Emegen - Uzengigush
Today you bid farewell to Emegen and move on towards UZENGIGUSH valley in the shadow of DANKOVA PEAK (5982m). This summit, a challenging climb even for professional mountaineers, stands royally, commanding your attention at every turn. A clear view of the mountain-top is unforgettable. The UZENGIGUSH glacier is about 7 km long and resembles INYLCHEK glacier in the Central Tien-Shan (albeit on a smaller scale). This remote location is home to many species of wild animal and is also a designated hunting reserve. Great herds of Ibex and Marco Polo sheep are visible all around. Two nights camping near the river.

Day 5. Uzengigush
A whole day at leisure. Today you may wish to choose from a variety of optional tours. As before, there are ample opportunities hiking, climbing or relaxing - something for everybody. Overnight camp beside the truck.

Day 6. Uzengigush - Karakol
This morning your tour heads back towards Karakol. You drive along long and narrow valley rivers back to Karakol. Again beautiful nature gives you prodigious views of this remote area. Overnight accomodation at the Turkestan Yurt Camp.

Day 7. Karakol - Almaty
After breakfast, you will say goodbye to Kyrgyzstan as we continue your tour to Almaty through the towns and villages of Kazakhstan (4000km). There will be time to explore on arrival the nightlife of this huge (by Central Asian standards!) city. Overnight accommodation at the Hotel Otrar (3*) - a blissful luxury after your mountain adventure.

Day 8. Almaty - Depart for home
Today you fly home, taking with you many unforgettable memories of your spectacular vacation in the Wild Tien-Shan.
